The big green Bob

The big green Bob

Today, we hear from Bob of Dunedin. He received the Big Green Cookbook as a “root” participant a few months ago. Bob is officially from Dunedin, FL, but lives and work in Chicago. He is sending the book to NY.

“hey there…not only do i have writer’s block but also cooking block…anyway here’s what i cooked up from the book you sent.. i’m sending it on to Dan in NJ next…hope he’s faster than me.

The cover of the Big Green Cookbook by Jackie Newcent announces having “hundreds of Planet-Pleasing recipes and tips for a Luscious, Low Carbon LIfestyle”. Well I can’t say that pleasing the planet is what I’m looking to please when thinking of what’s for dinner but when it comes to reversing the effects of global warming you do have my attention. After all, cooking on a stove is one thing, living on one is something entirely different. Being “green” is not only gentle on the planet but changing our overly consumptive ways can also be easy on the wallet, and that’s not a bad idea in these tight economic times. The book’s sections are broken down by season which is my favorite way to cook. I like my cherries in the summer and pumpkins in the fall thank you.

I wanted a side dish other than rice or potatoes to go with the fresh cod I bought from our local wholesale fishmonger and the broccoli rabe from the outdoor green market. So on page 278 I found Lemon-Pistachio Quinoa Pilaf that seemed to be the ticket. The fresh, light flaky cod and sharp crunchy broccoli rabe needed something in the middle to balance the extremes and the lemony taste of this dish with the nutty green crunch of the pistachios was perfect. It was easy to make and I’ll keep this recipe handy when we have guests for dinner to liven up whatever shares the plate with it. The next time I’ll make twice as much and have some cold the next day for lunch as the recipe suggests. Leftovers for lunch in the office is quite trendy anyway and probably green too.”

Also, in other Itinerant Cookbook Project news, we have the Wings: 50 High-Flying Recipes for America’s Favorite Snack cookbook traveling to Madeira Beach where Carol will make her recipe before sending it on its way somewhere else.

In France, the Burger Bar: Build Your Own Ultimate Burgers cookbook is traveling really fast. Marc-Antoine passed it on to Faye in Bar-sur-loup, France, who was quick to send it to Judie of Exeter, UK.

So as of today, the 10 cookbooks distributed in Tampa have already gone a long way. Some have stayed locally. Others have already traveled to San Francisco, Chicago, New-York, Ontario, Amsterdam, France, the UK, and Tokyo, Japan.

Things are getting interesting and I’m now realizing that I need a proper technique to keep track of where the 10 cookbooks actually are, or I’ll get confused very quickly.
